We are SO thankful for all of our WAVES parents who continually step forward to volunteer at the swim meets. In order to keep this a smooth-flowing, efficient meet for our children, we need over 85 parent volunteers! This number does not include our lead parents and officials who have committed to helping during the meets.
Here are short descriptions of the volunteer positions:
Age Group Parent Helpers (Lead Parent - Mary Stanberry):
One parent per age group arrives early (no later than 6:45 am) to the meet to check in the swimmers. This involves checking their name off of our meet list and marking their event numbers on their arms with a Sharpie. During the meet, parent helpers listen for your age group's upcoming events and meet the swimmers under the pavilion (or designated area at an away meet) near the ready bench to line them up and to check to see if everyone is there. If they are not there, you may have to try to find them. You then escort the swimmers to the ready bench and then you are off to watch the races. This is a good position for you if you would like to keep tabs on your swimmer as they are preparing to swim :)
Ready Bench Helpers (Lead Parents - Kirsten Arendes & Wendy Adams)
Helping with the ready bench is a great way to get to know the kids, and it is easy to do. We will have two volunteer shifts for home meets. Volunteers will help swimmers line up in their heat. With younger swimmers, volunteers will help relay teams get lined up and to the correct spot poolside. You can get on the job training. Did I mention we have shade and a big fan?
Timers & Scribes (Lead Parents: Gary Gable & Paul Aday)
Timers and Scribes do just what the job says, time the swimmers and scribe the results. Each lane has 3 timers and 1 scribe. At most swim meets, we are required to provide 1/2 of the timers and scribes during each of the three shifts. During Time Trials we have to provide ALL of the timers and scribes! There is NO experience necessary and you can't get any closer to the action than at the foot of the pool! This is our most manpower-intensive position and LOTS of volunteers are needed. If you are new to swim team, this is an especially good volunteer opportunity for you!!
Meet Setup (Still need a Lead Parent!!)
The Friday evenings prior to home meets we need to set up the pop-up tents, ropes and other "gear" to ready the pool for the swim meet. This generally takes less than an hour, and all help is greatly appreciated! At away meets, these helpers arrive at the meet prior to 6:45am to set up the pop-up tents so we can check-in our children and have a place to meet. Away meet set-up generally takes 15 minutes. This help is EXTREMELY valuable to me and Mary-Brooke, because even though we can do many things, those pop-up tents are very heavy (not to mention old and finicky!) and require a little extra muscle-power to get put into place.
So now you are ready to sign up to help!! Just click on Swim Meets, then the meet we are about to swim, then the big "V" and put your name in a spot!
THANK YOU!!!
