Dear Waves Parents,
My name is Brian McCarthy and I am the head official with The Woodlands Waves. First I'd like to welcome back all the returning families and add a special warm welcome to all the new families. You are in for a great season filled with team unity, spirit and fellowship. We're glad you've chosen to swim with the Waves!
We are currently recruiting parents who have a desire to volunteer, but may not be quite sure where they would fit in. I'd like you to consider volunteering as an official. My experience as a volunteer started five years ago when my daughter first signed-up for the Waves as a 7 year-old. I knew absolutely nothing about swimming and I volunteered as a timer. Each year I became more involved and was soon recruited to be an official. As an official, I became certified in stroke and turn, starter, provisional referee, and referee. Officials, I believe, have the easiest job of all and you'll have a front row seat at every swim-meet as well. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to teach the kids proper swim techniques, because you will gain a complete understanding of what they are suppose to be doing in the water. The training only involves a two-hour lecture, a two-hour on-deck training session and an easy open-book test. Did I mention you get preferred parking next to the pool? Or that you get free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches?
For those of you who signed up at the meeting last week, I appreciate you stepping up. For those of you debating, I can't stress enough how much your involvement means to the existence of the team, and I can't say enough good things about being an official. I hope you will consider volunteering as an official or in any other capacity.
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
See you at the pool!
Brian McCarthy
