Week 4 - Coach's Corner
Waves swimmers and families - what a great meet last Sunday against the Riptides! Lots of "good racing", record setting and overall improvement! I am very pleased with how well you are taking what we are learning during the week and applying that to do your personal best.
While saying that, please keep in mind, swimming is a TEAM SPORT - it may often look and feel like an individual sport, but it is in fact a team sport. Our score - 353! (WOW!) reflects that for sure. This was definitely a team effort and that is why relays are one of the most important components of a meet. Please remember if you have been selected to swim a relay, please stay committed to remaining for your relay event. Please remember relays, are considered by many, as the best events to swim. Just getting selected to swim one is rewarding. Leaving or backing out of a relay lets your teammates and the entire Waves team down. If for some reason a swimmer cannot stay for the entire meet, please be sure you are not needed on a relay. If you are on a relay and need to leave for some reason please let Janet or Heather know ASAP so we can replace you! If you cannot swim a relay and know before the meet, please sign the no relay binder!
This week we will be focusing on attacking the sport shark style! You have all heard of "Shark Week" this week we will be our "Mahi-Mahi" week - getting ready to chomp down on some Spring Creek Oak dolphins! Coaches will be focusing on SPRINTING, starts and finishes! With sprinting, we will not swim as many yards. Many of you probably already understand this idea, i.e - if you are running on a treadmill at 6mph it may seem fast! If you speed it up to 7mph, then amp in up to 8mph, and then back to 7- it doesn't seem so fast. That is the approach we will be taking this week.
Looking forward to another great week of practice. Remember we are the Waves and we still practice even if it rains - you are already wet! Any practice cancelations will come via text due to thunder or lightning extended delays! Don't forget your water bottles for your swimmers to have on deck and feel free to email me any questions you may have!
